A few weeks ago I picked up the LEGO Movie 2 pack ( set number 70847), mainly to get the minifigs included there. This resulted in me looking for more TLM2 minifigs on ebay, where instead, I came across this little set 70841 'Benny's space squad'
Not having a Benny in my collection, this seemed like a good way to get one along with some additional minifigs.
With a listed piece count of just 62, what we are getting here is basically a figure pack with a couple of micro builds to sweeten the deal, the set is a budget price to begin with but I managed to snag one for £6.95 including postage (Considering I've seen some less scrupulous ebay sellers selling Benny on his own for around half that price, this was a good value proposition)
Not a lot of parts in the box... but we're really here for the minifigs anyway.
I grew up in the 80's, and some of my earliest memories of LEGO are the vintage space sets, the aesthetic here definitely harkens back to that era, with a pair of retro styled vehicles and 4 mostly faithful reproductions of the iconic space men,
We get Benny (of course) with his endearing cracked helmet and worn chest logo, as well as Jenny (White), Lenny (In a previously unseen pink colour scheme) and Kenny (Yellow), while Benny has a reversible happy/shocked face, the other three are more faithful to the originals with their visor-less helmets, colour co-ordinated oxygen tanks and generic smiley heads.
We also get a nice range of traditional style accessories including a metal detector and a wrench.
Also in this set we get an adorably cute, brick built mini robot, shown with a minifig for scale.
The first of the 2 vehicles is a simple, one man spaceship in a blue and grey colour scheme, the build and design feels very faithful to those 80's original sets, even that logo on the front slope sparks nostalgia!
Lastly, we have a small grey buggy which can seat up to 2 minifigs at once. and has a couple of clips on the back, to hold the accesories.
Much like the previous LEGO movie set I looked at, this is great value for money. As well as appealing to classic space fans like myself, this would definitely appeal to modern younger fans too. Definitely recommended.
