LEGO 3815 Spongebob Squarepants - Heroic Heroes of the Deep

Are you ready kids....

After a brief break, I'm back with another set review. If you're following the Facebook page. You'll see that I picked up a pair of used Spongebob sets locally a few weeks back (from the same Facebook seller I picked up my recent Marvel sets from).

Today I'm looking at the first of those 2 sets, which I finally got around to building. Set no. 3815 Heroic Heroes of the deep. This set was originally released in 2011 and has a piece count of just 95.

This is obviously a small set and consists of just a single 'Boatmobile' vehicle build and 3 minifigs.

The first thing to notice about this set is the colours. After so many 'realistic' Marvel sets and modular buildings, this thing looks and feels like a more classic set with its primary colours and use of some bigger boat pieces and is clearly evoking the colourfully animated source material.

As is the norm with these smaller sets, this was a quick and simple build. The boatmobile itself was put together in under 5 minutes. (Even with 'assistance' from my youngest child)

The previous owner had these out on display so there is some discolouring on some pieces.

It's a nice enough build. You can see the simple construction stages in the build pics, this is clearly aimed at younger LEGO fans which is understandable given the nature of the license. The finished vehicle is at least a lot of fun, we get space to seat our 2 heroes, there is a telephone piece connected to Jumper plates in the center console. One seat has a steering wheel and there is a lever for the passenger to operate.

There are flick launchers with missiles on either side, a flotation ring decorates the bow and we have a  rear fin and spinning propeller piece at the stern.

Apart from the boat, we get 3 minifigs included in this set. Spongebob Squarepants himself, along with Patrick are garbed in their superhero costumes, and Plankton in his robot suit.

Plankton himself is just a printed sand green cylinder piece, but his dark green robot suit features a printed entrance hatch, 2 claw arms in silver and a black propeller. He is encased in a trans clear dome piece that sits atop a black 2x2 circle piece.

His accessory is the stolen 'Krabby Patty' secret formula, which our heroes have to retrieve. Plankton is the unexpected highlight of this set for me, he is just so unique among  LEGO minifigs and packs a lot of character into such a small 'build'

Spongebob and Patrick appear here exclusively in these superhero costumes, Spongebob gets an all blue costume and cape and a bubble gun for his accessory. He has a determined face print on a combined torso and head piece which makes him smaller than a regular minifig.

Patrick Star comes in a green and yellow costume with a green cape, although he doesn't come with an accessory, he is shown holding the telephone piece on the box art.

So all in all, a nice enough. If unremarkable set that gives you 3 of the shows core cast in a superhero themed set and a small but fun vehicle. I really like the minifigs here and will be adding these guys to my City.

Check back soon as I have a much bigger Spongebob Squarepants set still in my build queue and will be reviewing that one soon.

Construction has also finally started on Block City proper. There is still a lot of work to be done, but I'm happy to have gotten started at last... Stay tuned for future updates!
