Dr Who, Marvel & More...
For this update, I'm taking quick look at various bootleg minifigs I've purchased recently...
This batch covers characters from disparate themes, but I'm including them all here in one update for simplicity, I hope to do this on a semi-regular basis, so those of you not following along on Instagram or Facebook can still check out my smaller purchases here on the blog.
Let's start with Dr. Who, specifically the current and 13th Doctor, as portrayed in the long running sci-fi series by Jodie Whittaker.
Produced by 'WM' brand, this minifig features an accurate to the show outfit of blue leggings and brown boots, black T-shirt with braces that somehow disappear behind the T-shirt print (oops!) and a grey overcoat with blue lining. We get a single sided smiling face print and a hairpiece that is cloned from LEGO in blonde.
We don't get a Sonic Screwdriver unfortunately, but the Doctor does come with her Tardis Key printed in a 1x2 clear tile.
Not much to see at the back though there is some minimal back printing under the overcoat.
She looks great alongside the 11th and 12th Doctors from LEGO 21304. The printing on this fig is good but not up to the standard we've come to expect from the best of the bootleg brands. It's a shame about the torso print error also, If you're desperate for a 13th Doctor minifig, this will fill the gap but will need some adjustments or customizing if you're particular about the details.
Next up we have a couple of Marvel minifigs, and as much as I've enjoyed the MCU based sets we've been getting from LEGO, I'm always a sucker for any comic book based minifigs.
From prolific bootlegger Pogo, we have Gamora, a character I fell in love with during the original 'Annihilation' comics event (I have a tattoo of her to prove it!) 'The most dangerous woman in the galaxy' has been changed in recent continuity to act and feel more like her MCU counterpart, but this classic costumed version is a fantastic representation of her older look.
Rather than an alternate face print, we get an entire alternate head with an angry face, along with a choice of hair or hood. Lots of display options here. She comes with a black sword that looks cloned from the LEGO Lord of the Rings theme.
Gamora also includes her green cape, her costume is as revealing as it is in the comics, definitely not the kind of thing we would see from TLG. As a quick comparison, here is a pic alongside MCU Gamora from 76021 from the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie.
Again from Pogo, we have another comic book accurate depiction of an MCU mainstay. The longtime Avenger Black Widow. Not so many display options with this one but luckily the figure itself is nicely detailed. We get a single sided smirking face print and a distinctive, long, red hair piece that may be an original mold.
Widow sports her trademark catsuit with gold ringed belt and Widow's sting printed on her wrists. Her top is partially unzipped revealing her cleavage. Again much more risque than any official product. For weapons, she carries 2 realistic styled pistols.
Continuing on to another Pogo fig from another theme, we have Ellen Ripley from the Alien movies. This one is based on the second movie and comes with a perfect replica of the M41A Pulse Rifle. The iconic weapon was the first thing I noticed after opening the fig.
Pogo can be hit or miss with their minifig quality, so I was happy that all the ones I received in this delivery were very good. Ripley in particular is very nicely detailed. Featuring an all over print depicting her battle worn look from the finale of Aliens. Complete with grenade belt and the wrist mounted tracking device to find Newt. The attention to detail is amazing.
The hair piece looks like it may be cloned from a Hobbit minifig but suits it's purpose well enough. Again the excellent detailing is continued to the back.
Next up is the Predator. Pogo actually make a few different versions of the iconic hunters but I felt this was the best looking of their designs. Featuring original moulds for the helmet, shoulder armour and cannon as well as wrist blades. This really feels unique amongst mini figures.
The fig, once again, features an all over print. The cannon on the shoulder can rotate for aiming. There is only a plain black head piece under the helmet.
I actually purchased another version of this same mold a month or so back. I posted a pic on the facebook page but never looked at him here. He is exactly the same minifig but in trans clear plastic for stealth mode. The only colour on this variant, is the yellow on his eyes.
As we have Ripley and a couple of Predators. We definitely need some Aliens for them to fight against.
The all black Xenomorph is a difficult design to translate to minifig. There have been a few attempts from more than one company. Even Pogo themselves have released a couple of different designs. This one looks the best of the current ones out there in my opinion, even if he ends up being a little tall.
Built around the torso used for LEGO skeletons, the Alien strikes an imposing figure. The head sculpt is an original design and actually come with a hinged jaw piece, a nice touch. We get standard skeleton arms and legs that appear to be unique, though they may be from a Star Wars minifig. Sound off in the comments if you recognise them.
The shoulders and tail are one large piece that connect to the neck. The overall look of the finished fig is very evocative of the Giger designed Alien, considering the scale that's an impressive feat. Although he stands up well enough when he's stood straight, you'll need to secure at least one of his feet to a stud to get any kind of running or action pose.
I'll finish the update with a shot of some Alien vs Predator action taking place on the streets of Block City! As you can see here I purchased 3 copies of the Xenomorph.
I bought these minifigs from this seller on Aliexpress, my order was tracked and arrived in approximately 3 weeks.
