LEGO 70648 - Iron Skull Sub Attack

"HAIL HYDRA!"

Continuing my look at a pair of used Marvel sets I picked up locally, today is the turn of set 70648 - Iron Skull Sub Attack. This 2016 set from the Super Heroes theme contains 335 pieces, making 2 sub-aquatic vehicles, and 4 minifigs. Once again this set came to me mostly built so no build pics, so we will start by looking at the minifigs.

First up is the Hydra scuba soldier, this Henchman for the villain faction has the same body as the soldier from 76017 - Captain America vs Hydra.  But being as this set is underwater themed, the head piece is changed to a set of goggles and a printed mouth cover.

We get the traditional green and yellow Hydra uniform, only the front and back of the torso has printing. It features yellow straps and we get matching gloves. The leg piece and the arms are a darker green for some contrast. Being a scuba soldier, he comes with some lime green flippers and a light grey breathing mask for his accessories.

The longtime nemesis of Captain America and sometime leader of Hydra is the Red Skull. This variant is oddly referred to as the Iron Skull and was missing from my used set when I picked it up. I purchased this guy separately on ebay for £2.99 and he came without any accessories.

We get the red head piece with a single sided face print and all over black costume that appears to be some kind of body armor (For underwater combat possibly?) The only highlight of which is the skull logo on the chest. He is, honestly, a pretty plain looking minifig but I'm glad I have him for completion of this set.

Scuba Steve!

You can't have the Red Skull without Captain America. This earlier LEGO rendition of the Super Soldier has a more comic book style appearance, rather than being beholden to the MCU and is better for it. The bright iconic uniform is intact and if course he has his shield (Though I'm not sure it would be effective as a throwing weapon under water!)

Apart from his Shield, this version of Cap has the same breathing mask we get on the Hydra soldier and a pair of flip flops, this time in red. The single sided piece is unique to this version and features blue lenses over the eyes and silver detailing on the back.

Scuba Suit Iron Man ended up being the highlight of this set for me. He comes in a unique light green and gold armor with a bulky shoulder piece.

The face plate lifts up and we get alternate smirking and angry faces for Tony Stark. The back of the armor is bulked out with a couple of additional pieces (possibly representing an oxygen tank?)  This is a very nicely detailed fig and as someone who owns multiple Iron Man variants. This one is at least doing something different. we get trans orange studs and cylinders as accessories.

The Underwater Jet is used by the Hydra Henchman. The small and simple vehicle is built in green and grey. We have a couple of stud launchers on the sides and there are 2 black harpoons protruding from the front. There are handles for one minifig to hold as the Jet pulls him along.

The Red Skull's sub is the main part of the build.. this Imposing looking vehicle is mainly built in black, with some grey, yellow and Trans red pieces. There are stickers of the Hydra logo along with twin stud launchers along either side.

The canopy features another Hydra logo on its roof. Also from the top you can see the trans red cell that can be used to hold a minifig. This is a bulky. well built vehicle and actually has quite a bit of weight to it.

There are trans orange discs at the rear to represent the propulsion system. We get grey fins in 2 sizes. The smaller ones are adjustable.

The play feature of this set is the cell. This can be unclipped from the underside of the sub and dragged along behind the vehicle by the attached chain piece

The cage has is a built up black frame with trans red front and back pieces. One is fixed but the other features a 1x1 printed keypad tile and opens up to allow you to place a minifig in the cell. The box art for the set features Cap in there.

The sub canopy opens up and there is a seat for a single minifig inside.

And there we have it. Another great early Marvel set from the time we didn't only get endless MCU based sets. We get 2 core Avengers and a nice pair of villains along with a genuinely impressive submarine.

I was initially going to flip this set on Ebay but I'm quite fond of the minifigs and there more comic book style appearance so this one is staying in the collection for now.

If you haven't already done so, you can see my review of the other Marvel set I picked up here, and you can follow along the facebook page here where I share additional pics and hauls,

Thanks for reading and check back soon.
