Unleash the Monsters!
With Halloween just around the corner, and the Lepin Haunted House my most likely next big build. The short-lived Monster Fighters theme that launched (and ended) back in 2012 has been in the forefront of my mind... I wasn't fully invested in collecting LEGO back then but if I was, this theme would have definitely been on my radar.
I buy most of my used sets from ebay and I've gotten pretty good at hunting down a bargain, so I've been buying up some Monster Fighters sets and minifigs over the last few weeks with the idea of combining them with the similarly themed Hidden Side sets that I've recently gotten interested in.
(Although not branded as Monster Fighters. I'm counting most of the CMF from series 14 alongside this theme as they have a lot in common)
So let's see what I've been
9463 The Werewolf
This was the first set that came in the post. It has a piece count of 243 and comes with 2 minifigs.
I paid £11.99 for this set, it was listed as complete with instructions and arrived to me in a ziplock bag inside a padded envelope.
This is another small simple set (I'm primarily concerned with getting these minifigs) that consists of a vehicle for the hero and a tree that launches the werewolf. The tree will certainly fit in well with my recently purchased Hidden Side graveyard.
My youngest daughter instantly took an interest in this set after seeing the manual, and asked to build it with me so I didn't manage to take any build pics.
The Monster Fighting hero in this set is 'Major Quinton Steele'. He comes with his tan and grey roadster, and a standard rifle piece with a couple of gold coloured attachments. His outfit and vehicle are very early 20th Century styled, and are clearly meant to evoke the classic black and white Universal Monster movies that inspires much of this theme.
The major has a single sided head featuring a stern face with a monacle'd eye. He wears a pith helmet instead of a hair piece and has a simple back print that features his ammo belt.
The other part of the build (and the lair of 'The Werewolf') is the tree. It is built up in various shades of green and brown and it's play feature is a launcher that catapults the werewolf so he can attack the Major when he attempts to retrieve the orange Moonstone.

This stone is located on a pedestal at the base of the tree. According to the lore, our heroes have to collect these before Lord Vampyre to prevent him and his monsters from achieving eternal night.
The 'Wolf' Moonstone |
The Werewolf himself has a unique head piece in brown with black accents, his torso too, is mostly brown and features a print of a shirt torn open, this 'ravaged' effect is continued onto his blue leg piece.
A neat little set, this copy had a couple of sun faded pieces on the vehicle, but was otherwise in great condition. A good first foray for me into this theme.
Frank Rock minifigure
The next Monster Fighting hero to arrive was 'Frank Rock' Originally included in 2 sets, 9461 The Swamp Creature and 9467 The Ghost Train. I had no interest in 9461 as the build and tiny vehicle didn't look appealing and the Ghost Train is one of the more expensive sets in this line, so I tracked down the minifig by himself.
I paid £2.49 for the minifig only with no accessories from an eBay dealer I've used before (less than the price of a blind bagged CMF)
He is supposed to have 2 pistols, but I could only find one in my spare accessories so I will need to order him another one.
He looks like a true action hero with his stubble and scarred, stern face, Frank wears a brown sleeveless aviator jacket over a dirty vest and tan trousers with some nice detailing including knee pads and an ammo belt. He has a slicked black hair piece I haven't come across before.
His alternate face print features sunglasses and a confident grin. He has minimal back print on his torso.
I immediately loved this figure, I will likely find him a vehicle that suits his action hero image, but either way I'm really liking these minifigs so far. His 'Monster Arch Enemy' is listed as the swamp creature, an updated version of this character shows up in the LEGO movie franchise, and I have the CMF version from the second movie to use as Frank's foe.
Monster Minifigs (part 1)
Although not part of the Monster Fighters line officially, most the characters in series 14 of the long running CMF line are certainly a good fit for the theme, we can definitely add some reinforcements to Lord Vampyre's forces! I had a couple of these guys already in my collection, and have added a few more as I've been building my Monster Fighters Collection. Let's take a look...
First up is the 'Fly Monster', with more than a passing resemblance to the enemies from the Galaxy Squad theme, this mostly black minifig features a unique fly head with bulbous translucent red eyes, mostly black body with minimal printing and one normal hand, his left hand is a large pincer claw. There is no back print but we get a nice pair of trans wings in soft grey plastic.
Next we have the 'Zombie Pirate Captain' This bearded villain features the pirate tropes of a wooden leg and a hook for a hand, he has a traditional captain's hat piece and should have a scabbard style sword (I'm still sorting through my accessories, so it's here somewhere hopefully) He has a nicely printed Torso and Legs with very minimal back print.
The 'Rock Monster' is a good stand in for the Frankenstein's Monster type villain from the Monster Fighters series proper, he uses the same head top piece but in a different colour. This is an awesome minifig, he has a printed denim waistcoat that bears the legend 'Shock 'n' Roll' on the back, he has a printed padlock necklace and carries a red guitar that has a black bat print on it.
Finally for this update, we have the Zombie Cheerleader, and she may be my favourite minifig in this line, she looks surprisingly happy for a Zombie. Her uniform is dark green and white and she has a tan hair piece with green hair ties for her pigtails, her top features the letter Z and she has minimal back print.
Thanks for reading, check back soon as I take a look at a couple more Monster Fighters sets and some more minifigs.
